I’ve been doing quite some streetfishing in Amsterdam this year, mainly for predatory fish like Perch, Pike and Zander (Dutch: Baars, Snoek and Snoekbaars). To protect your main line from Pike biting through it, or from sharp objects under water, it’s smart to use a leader which is stronger. You can buy ready-made fishing leaders at the sport fishing store (e.g. steel ones), but it’s cheaper to make them yourself. If you use fluorocarbon, you get the added benefit that it’s almost invisible for fish under water which helps in catching Perch and Zander.

Here’s a video on how to make such a fluorocarbon leader. (It’s in Dutch with English subtitles – just click the CC-button). It’s easy to make (you don’t even need a snap and a swivel) and it’s cheap.
Materials
- Fluorocarbon (thick enough to prevent Pike biting through it – I’m using 0.92 mm)
- Scissors
- Lighter
My streetfishing setup in Amsterdam
I use this fishing setup for all predatory fish there (Perch, Pike, Zander):
- Rod: Savage Gear SG2 Medium Game, length: 221 cm, casting weight: 12 – 35 g
- Reel: Savage Gear SG6 3000 FD
- Main line: Mikado Nihonto Octa Braided line, diameter: 0.12 mm, breaking strength: 8.9 kg
- Leader: Savage Gear 100% soft FluoroCarbon, diameter: 0.92 mm, breaking strength: 40.5 kg
I use a variety of lures. My current favorites are spinners for Perch and Pike, and shads with jig heads for Zander, but I also use crankbaits, swimbaits and jerkbaits.
